Top 10 Things to do on the Gulf Coast in the Winter

I don’t know about you, but before I lived on the coast, winter seemed to drag on incessantly. By mid January I would find myself staring out the window at the grey coldness, daydreaming of sunny days at the beach. If this sounds familiar, then I have good news! WINTER AT THE BEACH IS GREAT!!

With smaller crowds and lower prices, this is the perfect time for a beach vacation. Winters on the Gulf Coast are filled with abundant sunshine, and daytime temperatures in the 70’s are quite common. While you may not want to take a dip right now, there’s plenty to keep you entertained this time of year.

1. Explore the Outdoors

Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan are home to miles of beaches, nearly 20,000 acres of wildlands and 24 miles of nature trails. Walks on the beach are just a little more magical with no crowds and exceptionally vibrant sunsets, so pack a late afternoon picnic and your camera for an unforgettable outing. You can also go exploring in the Bon Secure Wildlife Refuge or trek down one of the many nature trails that make up the Gulf Coast State Park.

2. Seashell Hunting

With over 400 species of shells found in the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf Coast is known for the best shelling beaches in North America. Go at low tide and bring a small rake and something big to carry your finds home in!

3. Golf

Fort Morgan/Gulf Shores, Alabama is a golfer’s paradise! Boasting 8 signature golf courses (3 right here on Fort Morgan Peninsula), you will always be able to find a new challenge. Since there are smaller crowds, you can play right through!

4. Biking

If you prefer two wheels to four, don’t forget to pack your bike (or just rent one when you get here). Many of the main roads in the area have bike lanes to make it easy to avoid traffic. There are also 11 miles of Greenway Trails and multiple rambling bike trails through the State Park.

5. Winter Fishing

Winter fishing heats up along the Gulf Coast from December to March. Take a charter boat out, enjoy inland fishing from the beach, or make a short trip the Gulf State Park Pier. Pompano, redfish, black drum, and sheepshead are all active during the colder months so dinner is just a cast away.

6. Oysters! (and Other Amazing Culinary Delights)

November through March is prime time to find the most flavorful Gulf Coast oysters and you can get them in a variety of preparations all over the island. Now, if oysters aren’t your thing (and you weren’t able to catch your dinner for the day), don’t worry. The choice of restaurants between Fort Morgan and Orange Beach will satisfy your appetite for whatever you are craving. From creative fine dining to french fries, there is something for everyone.

7. Museums and Art Galleries

Are you a fan of history…fine arts…horticulture…all of the above? We’ve got you covered. There are multiple museums and galleries in the area including the Gulf Coast Art Alliance Gallery and Historic Fort Morgan State Park. You can also take a quick ferry ride to the renowned Bellingrath Gardens or the Fort Gaines Historic Site for an all day adventure.

8. Mardi Gras Celebrations

Most people think of New Orleans when they think Mardi Gras, but did you know that this area has been celebrating Mardi Gras since the 1800’s? Multiple parades and societies turn the area into a family-friendly festival of fun for days leading up to Fat Tuesday. Bring your lawn chair and get ready to catch some beads!
